Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has restarted operations at its Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi, following a production halt that began in March 2026 due to Iranian attacks on the Khalifa Economic Zone in Abu Dhabi.
According to the company, output at the facility is expected to reach 50% of its installed capacity within the coming days.
EGA also stated that it aims to achieve the technical readiness required for full alumina production by the end of the year.
However, the pace of further ramp-up at the Al Taweelah refinery will depend on supply chain conditions and the company's ongoing optimisation of its alumina sourcing strategy.
In 2025, the refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina, which accounted for 46% of EGA's total alumina requirements-the primary feedstock used in its aluminium smelters.
Production of hydrate, the precursor to alumina, was successfully resumed at the facility on 24 June 2026.
Situated adjacent to the Al Taweelah smelter, the refinery transports alumina via conveyor belts to on-site storage and subsequently to the smelter. The Al Taweelah alumina refinery has been in operation since 2019.
