Greensteel Australia to build country's first fully electric steel plant

Australian steelmaker Greensteel Australia has announced a A$500 million investment to construct the country's first new steel mill in over 30 years. The company has secured a 70,000-square-meter site in Mayfield North and expects to commence operations at the new facility in January 2028.
According to the company, the mill will be Australia's first steelmaking facility to operate entirely on electricity, with no natural gas used at any stage of the production process.
The plant will have an annual production capacity of 600,000 metric tons of finished steel, targeting the housing, transport, and energy sectors. Rebar will be the first product to be manufactured, with wire rod and steel coil planned for subsequent phases.
