India's metallurgy sector is poised to receive its largest-ever foreign direct investment through a US$11.5 billion greenfield aluminum project in Odisha. Adani Enterprises and Abu Dhabi's International Resources Holding (IRH) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government to establish a 50:50 joint venture.
The venture is expected to generate approximately 53,500 jobs, comprising 35,000 construction positions and 18,500 operational roles. The development will unfold in two phases, with an allocation of Rs 66,000 crore for Phase I and Rs 44,000 crore for Phase II.
Leveraging Odisha's rich bauxite reserves, the complex will feature an alumina refinery with an annual capacity of 4 million metric tons and an aluminum smelter capable of producing 2 million metric tons per year. The site will also host a 4,000-megawatt power plant and a downstream manufacturing park with a capacity of 1 million tons annually.
The partners will now proceed with land acquisition, infrastructure planning, and the procurement of statutory approvals.
