According to a statement released by the Turkish Steel Producers' Association (TCUD), Turkey's crude steel production reached 3.44 million metric tons in May this year, marking an 8.9% year-on-year increase. Over the first five months of the year, the country's crude steel output totaled 16.48 million metric tons, up 6.8% compared to the same period last year.
During the January–May period, Turkey's billet production amounted to 9.77 million metric tons, a slight decline of 0.6%, while slab production surged by 19.8% year on year to 6.71 million metric tons.
In the same timeframe, Turkey's finished steel production rose by 5.9% year on year to 18.36 million metric tons, while finished steel consumption increased by 7.8% to 16.68 million metric tons.
The TCUD noted that the EU's new quota regime, which took effect on July 1, is expected to significantly curb steel imports into the bloc. The association also highlighted that Turkey has been allocated a country-specific quota of 2.86 million metric tons, accounting for 15.6% of the total quota volume. It added that total Turkish steel exports to the EU are projected to surpass 3.0 million metric tons when shipments under the free trade agreement (FTA) quota are factored in.
