Qatar Aluminum Manufacturing Company (Qamco) confirmed on Sunday that Norsk Hydro's role as the marketing agent for their Qatalum aluminum joint venture has been terminated. No reason was provided for the decision.
"Following the termination, Qatalum will assume responsibility for the marketing and sale of its aluminum products on a provisional basis," Qamco said in a statement, adding that it continues to engage constructively with Hydro to ensure an orderly transition.
Reuters reported on Friday that Qatalum had canceled the commercial agreement under which the plant supplied metal to Hydro, and that Hydro had subsequently issued a force majeure notice to its customers.
Qamco does not expect any material adverse impact on the financial or operational performance of the 648,000-metric-ton-per-year Qatalum facility. Since March, the plant has been operating at only 60% of capacity following the outbreak of the Iran war.
Qatalum was established in 2006 as a 50-50 joint venture between Hydro and state-owned Qatar Petroleum (now known as QatarEnergy). QatarEnergy currently holds a 51% stake in Qamco.
