Madagascan miner Ambatovy resumes nickel production after cyclone

Ambatovy, the Madagascan mining company, has resumed production following a cyclone that struck in February, and expects to produce 2,500 metric tons of nickel in June, the company told Reuters on Thursday.
Cobalt production for the month is forecast to reach approximately 250 tons, Ambatovy added.
In a social media post, Ambatovy's chief executive Trevor Naidoo said the company restarted one acid plant on May 23 and plans to bring a second one online by the end of June.
Naidoo also noted that funding for the post-cyclone rebuild was provided by Ambatovy's current shareholder, Korea Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation (KOMIR), as well as Japanese trading house Sumitomo. Sumitomo sold its 54% stake to a group of investors in May.
Ambatovy produces nickel and cobalt briquettes. In 2025, the company's output reached approximately 29,000 tons of nickel and 2,700 tons of cobalt.
