Japan's April crude steel production achieves 0.3% rise

Japan's crude steel production reached 6.62 million tons in April, marking a 0.3% year-on-year increase and breaking a 13-month streak of declines. The uptick is partly attributed to a low comparison base from April 2025, when output fell by 6.4%. Pig iron production also rebounded, rising 0.7% to 4.77 million tons.
The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF) noted a broad-based recovery across the sector. Blast furnace output edged up 0.2% to 4.84 million tons, posting its first increase in two months. Electric arc furnace production rose 0.5% to 1.78 million tons, ending a two-month downward trend.
Despite the April rebound, total crude steel production for January–April 2026 fell 1.2% year on year to approximately 26.7 million tons.
