South Africa lifts steel import tariffs to as high as 30%

South Africa has raised import duties on targeted steel products to a range of 10% to 30%, aiming to shield its domestic steel sector from sluggish demand and a surge in global imports. The increased tariffs apply to flat steel, non-alloy steel, bars, wire rod, pipes and tubes, replacing the previous duty levels of 0% to 15%.
The country's International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) said the decision came in response to mounting pressure on local producers, including plant shutdowns at ArcelorMittal South Africa. Officials noted that the measures are designed to give domestic mills breathing room to restructure and invest in becoming more competitive.
South Africa also modified certain duty rebate provisions for downstream steel processing industries, while keeping preferential trade agreements in place for selected countries and regions.
