A subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited met with Congo's Minister of Mines, Louis Watum, on Thursday to discuss a project expected to produce between 200,000 and 500,000 tons of copper annually, according to statements released by the ministry.
Congo's copper output has more than tripled over the past decade, solidifying its position as the world's second-largest supplier of the key metal, behind only Chile.
The proposed mine is located in the central province of Kasai-Oriental, rather than the southeastern Katanga region where all of Congo's currently operating copper mines are situated. According to one of the statements, the potential project would be structured as a joint venture between a CREC subsidiary and MIBA, a state-owned diamond company.
Kasai-Oriental is the heart of Congo's diamond industry.
