India's crude steel output rises 6% in April 2026, consumption up 8%

India's crude steel production reached 14.09 million metric tons (mt) in April 2026, marking a 5.8% year-on-year increase, according to a provisional government data cited in a statement released by the Ministry of Steel on Wednesday, May 6.
Finished steel production for the month was estimated at 13.05 million mt, up 3.4% compared to the same period last year, the statement added.
Driven by robust demand from sectors such as infrastructure and manufacturing, finished steel consumption in April 2026 stood at approximately 12.99 million mt, an 8% rise year on year.
On the global trade front, India's steel imports totaled 0.68 million mt in April, while exports reached 0.47 million mt. Compared to April 2025, imports increased by 30.8% and exports grew by 24.9%.
