China to step up solid waste management in green push

China will take stronger measures to tackle solid waste under the newly released Action Plan for Comprehensive Solid Waste Management, officials from several government departments said at a recent State Council briefing.
The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) highlighted that by 2030, the plan aims to achieve major results in key areas, with annual comprehensive use of bulk solid waste reaching 4.5 billion tonnes and recycling of key secondary resources hitting 510 million tonnes.
The Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) said the focus is on urban-rural junctions, administrative boundaries, and environmentally sensitive areas. A three-year campaign against illegal dumping and disposal of solid waste is currently underway. By the end of 2025, 17,700 problems had been addressed nationwide, with 34.6 million tonnes of solid waste cleared.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) noted that during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the comprehensive utilization rate of industrial solid waste reached 57%. Next steps will target steel, nonferrous metals, and petrochemical industries to cut waste generation and boost recycling of industrial and secondary resources.
