China moves to seal abandoned mines, crack down on illegal mining

China has launched a nationwide campaign to identify and seal abandoned mines and step up action against illegal mining.
The State Council Work Safety Committee Office, together with the Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Ministry of Emergency Management, State Administration for Market Regulation, National Energy Administration, and National Mine Safety Administration, will carry out inspections, enforce sealing measures, and strengthen long-term regulatory mechanisms.
The move follows a series of deadly illegal mining incidents this year, which have posed threats to public safety, damaged strategic resources, disrupted the mineral market, and increased costs and risks across supply chains. Officials said the campaign will focus on strict inspections, sealing of abandoned mines, tougher enforcement, and long-term oversight to curb illegal mining activities.
