Magnesium alloy demand to grow as China's new e-bike rules take effect

China's new mandatory standard for electric bicycles (GB 17761-2024) came into effect on September 1, 2025. The new rules cap plastic use at no more than 5.5% of total weight and raise the weight limit for lead-acid battery e-bikes from 55kg to 63kg. Manufacturers were required to switch material systems by September 1, and from this December, all new two-wheel e-bikes sold must comply.
Magnesium alloy, known for being lightweight and durable, is emerging as the key solution to meet plastic reduction and weight requirements. Leading brands like Aima, Yadea, and Niu are already using the material in frames and wheel hubs. With China producing over 50 million two-wheel e-bikes annually and a current fleet size of around 380 million, the market potential is vast. Following the implementation of the new standard, magnesium alloy use in the sector is expected to increase by 100,000-200,000 tonnes per year, with applications set to expand well beyond structural parts.
