China's new mandatory national safety standards for electric bicycles will take effect on September 1, 2025, introducing strict limits on plastic use and overall vehicle weight. These changes are expected to boost the use of magnesium alloys in electric two-wheelers.
Known for being lightweight, shock-absorbing, and offering electromagnetic shielding, magnesium alloys are already used in wheels and frames by leading e-bike makers. Their application is likely to expand to fenders, footrests, and battery housings as the new standards come into effect.
With the annual e-bike production in China exceeding 50 million units, magnesium demand in this sector could increase by over 100,000 tonnes per year during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, bringing new growth opportunities to the magnesium industry.
