Xiaomi and Huawei file patents related to magnesium alloys

Xiaomi EV Technology Co., Ltd. has recently filed a patent titled "Die-Cast Magnesium Alloy, Its Preparation Method, and Automotive Structural Parts" (Publication No. CN120174246A), according to the China National Intellectual Property Administration. The patent describes a magnesium alloy designed for die-casting that contains aluminum (4.2~7.0%), manganese (0.15~0.5%), rare earth elements (La+Ce 0.20~2.50%), yttrium (0.01~1.5%) (RE+Y≥0.5%), calcium (0.03~0.80%), and trace amounts of other elements (Fe+Ni+Cu﹤0.01%, Zn﹤0.20%, impurity﹤0.05%). Notably, the alloy achieves excellent bending strength without the need for heat treatment, while maintaining good mechanical and casting properties. With a relatively low rare earth content, the alloy is especially suitable for vehicle body parts that need to withstand compressive forces, such as in crashes.
Meanwhile, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. has also filed a patent titled "Magnesium Alloy, Alloy Housing, and Electronic Device" (Publication No. CN120358694A). This patent introduces a magnesium alloy that combines aluminum (2.5%~4.5%), zinc (0.5%~1.0%), manganese (0.2%~0.8%), titanium (0.01%~1.0%), antimony (0.01%~0.5%), and small amounts of mixed rare earths (lanthanum and cerium). By using a low-aluminum Mg-Al-Zn alloy and adding these affordable rare earth (La/Ce) and refining elements, the new material significantly improves corrosion resistance while keeping production costs low. It is designed for use in electronic device housings and is well-suited for mass production.
