Western mining expands high-value use of salt lake magnesium resources

Qinghai Western Magnesium Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Western Mining, has developed a specialized active magnesium oxide product for cobalt precipitation, a breakthrough technology that fills a domestic gap and opens up international markets. This innovation promotes the diversified, high-value utilization of salt lake magnesium resources and provides a new solution for the cobalt precipitation industry.
This proprietary technology uses brucite from salt lake to produce high-purity active magnesium oxide (99.0%, including loss on ignition) for cobalt precipitation. This is a global first and the only domestic technology of its kind. The product has already been applied in cobalt recovery from tailings at African copper-cobalt mining companies and currently holds a 2.5% share of the global market. In 2024, Western Magnesium sold 4,900 tonnes of this specialized active magnesium oxide for cobalt precipitation.
