Baowu Magnesium and GWM team up to boost magnesium alloy lightweighting

On March 28, Baowu Magnesium Technology Co., Ltd. and Great Wall Motor Company Limited (GWM) signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement and unveiled a "Joint Laboratory for Magnesium Product Development". The two parties will deepen their collaboration, focusing on the application of magnesium alloy lightweighting technology in vehicle body, powertrain, and chassis components, driving high-quality development of GWM's new energy vehicle (NEV) business.
Through this strategic partnership, both sides will work together to advance the use of magnesium alloys in key areas such as body structures, battery case covers, and chassis systems. Joint efforts will target breakthroughs in the development of next-generation magnesium alloy materials, process optimization, and industrial-scale application, with the goal of significantly increasing magnesium usage per vehicle and ultimately enhancing both range and safety performance of NEVs.
The "Joint Laboratory for Magnesium Product Development" will leverage the strengths of both companies' technical centers to focus on three key areas: development and application of new magnesium alloy materials with properties such as heat resistance and high ductility for automotive components; development and application of powertrain and structural parts, such as E-drive housings and shock absorber towers that meet the high corrosion resistance and strength requirements of NEVs; promotion of magnesium alloy extrusions in NEV applications.
This collaboration marks a major shift from simple material supply to joint technology development. By integrating resources and innovating together, Baowu Magnesium and Great Wall Motors aim to build a fully integrated "materials–technology–application" ecosystem. Their partnership will boost the green growth of the new energy vehicle industry and help drive a lighter, low-carbon future powered by magnesium.
