Global magnesium production up 12% YoY in 2024

The global primary magnesium production capacity reached 1.75 million tonnes per annum in 2024, when the annual production increased by 12% YoY to 1.12 million tonnes in 2024 mainly due to the production rise in China, with the world's consumption rising by 4.76% YoY to around 1.1 million tonnes, according to statistics from China Magnesium Association under China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA).
In 2024, China has an annual production capacity of 1.49 million tonnes of primary magnesium. The country produced 1,025,800 tonnes of primary magnesium last year, up by 24.73%, and the annual production of magnesium alloy increased by 14.95% YoY to 396,800 tonnes, while that of magnesium powder declined by 6.7% YoY to 111,400 tonnes.
As the main magnesium production hub in China, Yulin city produced 642,400 tonnes of magnesium metal in 2024, up by 34% from the previous year, accounting for 62.61% of the national output and 55.08% of the global production, according to the municipal statistics bureau.
Fugu county, the core production area for magnesium in Yulin, produced 537,200 tonnes of magnesium metal in 2024, an increase of 46.98% from 2023, accounting for 52.35% of the national output and 47.54% of worldwide production, according to the local statistics bureau.
According to Shenmu Municipal Bureau of Statistics, Shenmu city produced 91,000 tonnes of magnesium metal in 2024, down by 9.5% from the prior year, with a 8.87% share of production in China and 8.05% globally.
