Silicon market sees few inquiries in Europe and Asia

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 16 Sep 05 – Although demand for silicon is down but there were few inquiries today and some of them culminated to something realistic. Market participants jibed that inquiries will continue to come in small numbers until something good happens to the market.
“We saw few inquiries today,” said a trader in Europe. “ But the market is not that great, so I am just talking to customers to see if I will push my products up.” The source told Asian Metal that Silicon 4-4-1 (western grade) is at around EUR1,250/t delivered to customers and 2-2-0-2 is around EUR1,300/t delivered to customers. He believes that market is going to be better in time to come but couldn’t say when. He put the blame of the sluggish market to luck of demand from aluminum industries
A producer told Asian Metal that they saw few inquiries but not much. “ We hope to start getting more inquiries from next month,” the source said. “ There were only few sales reported this month.”
Meanwhile, Indian traders expressed disappointment on the demand this week. “The demand is very low this week, although we saw a few inquiries and some dealers sold some quantities,” said a trader in India. “I don’t think in the whole of Mumbai there has been up to consumption of 200t this month.”
The source told Asian Metal that he sold 20t at the spot market this week but he was reluctant to sell it due to low price, and presently he has more than 20t in stock in the spot market. He predicted that market will be better during the winter as it is always a good season for silicon in India. According to him, the price for 5-5-3 is around USD990/t Mumbai port. This dealer buys from Hong Kong and China.
“The market is confusing,” said another trader from Thailand. “This week we got inquiries from large consumers in Bangkok. Although they discharged my price as being so expensive because they get it cheaper from China.” According to the source, most of the large consumers buy direct from China and his last sales was in July. This week he got a quotation from China for 4-4-1 at USD970/t CFR Bangkok port, and in the local market they sell USD1,030/t but customers complained that it is very expensive. In a year the dealer sell around 200-300t
