U.S. steel products imports fall by 22.1% YOY in Jan-Nov

According to the report compiled by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) based on the preliminary data released by the US Census Bureau, U.S. steel products imports in November were 1.37 million short tons (about 1.24 million tons), down by 9.2% MOM. In particular, the imports of finished steel stayed at about 1.18 million short tons, a month-on-month decrease of 5.5%.
In November, the U.S. imported the most finished steel from South Korea at 127,000 short tons, a decrease of 14% from the previous month; that imported 67,000 short tons of finished steel from Germany, a decrease of 1% from October; that imported 53,000 short tons from Turkey, down by 23% from last month; that imported 51,000 short tons from the Netherlands, up by 82% month-on-month; that imported 46,000 short tons from Japan, a month-on-month decrease of 41%.
From January to November, U.S. imports of steel products totaled about 20.53 million short tons, down by 22.1% YOY. In particular, the imports of finished steel were about 14.80 million short tons, down by 24.9% on a year-on-year basis.
It is estimated that U.S. would import 22.40 million short tons of steel products in 2020, a year-on-year decrease of 19.8%. In particular, the imports of finished steel are expected to reach 16.1 million short tons, a year-on-year decrease of 23.3%.
