  • Energy Minister: Israel to end coal era by 2025

Yuval Steinitz, the Energy Minister of Israel, announced on November 13 that Israel would completely stop using coal to generate electricity before the end of 2025.

In recent years, the use of coal for electricity production has been increasingly replaced by natural gas in Israel. Last November, Steinitz said Israel would phase out all coal-fired power generation before the end of 2030.Asian Metal Copyright Last November, Steinitz said Israel would phase out all coal-fired power generation before the end of 2030.Asian Metal Copyright With the increase in natural gas production and electricity generation with renewable sources, the country's timetable for ending coal power generation is five years shorter than planned.

Steinitz also said the transformation of the power plant will be carried out gradually to ensure reliable and stable power supply.

At present, Israel has two large coal-fired power plants, which are located in Hadera on Israel's northern coast and Ashkelon on Israel's southern coast respectively and operated by Israel Electric Company. With a total of 10 coal-fired generating units, the total generating capacity of these two power plants is about 4,840MW.

Last August, the Israeli government approved the closure of four coal-fired power units at the power plant in Hadera before June 2022, with another two to be converted to gas-fired ones before the end of 2025. According to the plan, one coal-fired unit at the power plant in Ashkelon will close in 2022, and the other three will be converted to gas-fired ones before the end of 2024.
