India imports less coking coal from Australia

India's dependence on Australian coking coal weakened in recent years, while imports from the U.S. and Canada have increased to about 16.7% of India's total imports for coking coal.
India imported 36.91 million tons of coking coal from Australia in the FY2018-19 (April 2018 to March 2019), accounting for 71% of India's total coking coal imports which is far lower than the 88% three years ago, according to Indian Coal Ministry. Three years ago, its imports of the material from America and Canada just accounted for 5.6%.
Australia's coal supplies were disrupted frequently in the past few years. Besides, heavy rains in February in the country's main coal-producing region and the tropical cyclone in Queensland in 2017 severely affected coal production. These reasons have raised concerns in India about the stability of Australian coal imports.
However, India's Adani Enterprises expects an increase in Australian thermal coal exports to India after the Carmichael mine project in Australia is put into production. The mine is expected to come on stream within two years.
