AM Statistics: Analysis on alumina production cut in Henan from Nov 15, 2017 to Mar 15, 2018

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 14 Sep 17 - On September 11, Henan government issued a policy to restrict alumina production by 30% during winter from November 15, 2017 to March 15, 2018. Based on Asian Metal database, there are eight alumina producers in Henan, with total annual alumina capacity at 12.7 million tonnes, accounting for 17% of China’s overall alumina capacity. The current running capacity is 11.6 million tonnes.
By detailed regions, there are three producers in Sanmenxia of Henan and two in Zhengzhou. The rest three producers are located in Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Pingdingshan respectively. The following graph shows that the alumina capacity in Sanmenxia tops at around 5.2 million tonnes, followed by Zhengzhou and Jiaozuo with capacity at 2.8 and 2.5 million tonnes respectively. Luoyang and Pingdingshan cover around 1.4 million tonnes and 800,000t respectively.
In China, Henan is the third biggest alumina production region, following Shanxi and Shandong. We can see details by the following graph.
In the first eight months, the alumina output in Henan totalized at around 7.25 million tonnes, up by 12% YOY, accounting for 16.6% of China’s total alumina output. Currently, alumina producers in Henan do not make detailed production cut plan. If local producers implement the policy strictly during the period, around 1.3 million tonnes of alumina output will be affected in the four months.
