China's investment in nickel smelting likely to make Indonesia world's third largest stainless steel producer

According to the data released by Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), in the first quarter of 2017, the direct investment from China totaled around USD0.6 billion, accounting for 8.2% of the total foreign investment in Indonesia and putting China in the third place behind Singapore (US$2.1 billion) and Japan (US$1.4 billion). China was the third largest investor in Indonesia in 2016 with direct investment of around USD2.67 billion.
Thomas, chairman of BKPM, mentioned that the policy advocated by Indonesian government to support the investment in downstream mineral-processing industries has achieved initial results, which is mainly reflected in the investment growth in the downstream industries of mineral and coal. The investment in nickel ore is the largest downstream investment with China taking up the largest share. China has become Indonesia's largest source of investment in mining and mineral-processing industries and its investment in nickel smelters is expected to make Indonesia the world's third largest producer of stainless steel in the near future.
