Silicon metal business moving slowly

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 17 Jun 05 – Chinese silicon metal business is still moving slowly these days with buyers and sellers refusing to come to any agreements on prices, industry participants reported.
“Foreign buyers offer low prices and we’re unable to make terms, so few deals have been concluded these days,” a South China trader told Asian Metal. “An Indian buyer bid USD990/t CIF for 240t of silicon 5-5-3. But we refused, as we can’t afford such low prices.”
The trader claimed that the materials were purchased domestically for RMB7,650/t, with ocean freight over USD40/t.
“This week, we concluded one 120t deal for USD950-960/t FOB CMP for silicon 5-5-3, headed for Southeast Asia,” said the source.
A Northwest-based trader confirmed the slow development of the silicon metal business. “We didn’t conclude any deals this week due to the slow market.”
The trader received an inquiry for silicon metal 4-4-1 from a South Korean buyer yesterday. “We offered USD1,015/t FOB CMP, with a quantity of 60t,” the source said. “The foreign buyer hasn’t responded yet.”
The source wants to ask for a low price of RMB8,150/t for silicon 4-4-1 in the domestic market. “The negotiation is underway.”
A Jiangxi-based trader said that a foreign buyer offered USD1,080/t FOB CMP for silicon metal 3-3-0-3. "We haven't decided whether to accept or not," the source said. "Because the silicon metal 3-3-0-3 we purchased was RMB8,800/t in ports, and it is difficult for us to get cheaper materials."
