BEIJING (Asian Metal) 25 Jul 16 - According to China Customs, China imported around 25.2 million tons of bauxite in the first half of 2016, up by 12.1% YOY. In June, the imports moved down by around 9% MOM to around 3.51 million tons.

From March to June, the bauxite imports kept going down according to the above graph. The main reason is Malaysian bauxite mining ban. In early 2015, Malaysia declared to stop bauxite mining for environmental protection. Owners were only allowed for exporting some stocks, but the volume was limited. By the new policy in late June, Malaysia will resume bauxite mining on September 14. Meanwhile, the major Chinese consumer stopped importing Indian bauxite from April, although a few other consumers started buying the material from east India from July. The imports from Malaysia and India fell by 33.56% and 8.23% YOY respectively to 5.22 million tons and 3.4 million tons in H1.

However, the imports from Guinea and Brazil climbed up significantly from March, resulting in the figure increase in H1 2016. In the first half of 2016, China imported around 4.57 and 1.55 million tons of bauxite from Guinea and Brazil respectively. The Guinean bauxite loading capacity by Winning Group, Weiqiao Aluminum and Yantai port may continue to rise in H2.

Australia was the biggest bauxite supplier to China in H1, with the volume at around 9.53 million tons, up by 0.54% YOY.

In order to get high grade bauxite, more Chinese consumers turned to Ghana, whose bauxite exports to China reached 486,000t in H1, up by 21.61% YOY.

In H1, China imported bauxite from Vietnam and Turkey for the first time. It is reported that the supply from Vietnam may continue in the coming few months.
