AM Statistics: China's newly-built primary aluminum capacity to reach about 660,000tpy in 2016

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 15 Jan 16 - According to Asian Metal Database, China will launch about 660,000tpy primary aluminum new capacities in 2016. There was about 3,570,000tpy primary aluminum capacities coming on stream in China in 2015, down from about 4,070,000tpy in 2014. Till late 2015, the total annual capacity for primary aluminum reached about 37.2 million tonnes.
The following table demonstrated the details of the newly-built capacity to be released in 2016 (Unit: 10,000t):
Chinese primary aluminum plants have constructed about 4,960,000tpy of primary aluminum till late 2015. However, as downstream demand for primary aluminum will still be dim and Chinese primary aluminum prices may fluctuate at low prices in 2016, some primary aluminum plants are not sure when to launch the newly-built capacities, such as Xinjiang East Hope, Shandong Xinfa, Inner Mongolia Jinlian and Ningxia Qinyi Industry.
Xinjiang Tianshan and Jiarun plan to launch 200,000tpy and 90,000tpy primary aluminum respectively after the Spring Festival. Guangxi Baikuang begins to initiate cells gradually in January. Shanxi Huaze will launch the new capacities in 2016, but has not decided the specific time.
Because it is obvious for Chinese primary aluminum industry that the supply exceeds demand severely and the government will solve the capacity excess problem of primary aluminum industry in 2016, Asian Metal believes that the new capacities to be released will slow down.
