Chinese prebaked anode prices stay at low levels

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 10 Dec 15 - Prebaked anode prices for new deals in December moved down by RMB100-200/t (USD16-31/t) to RMB2,850-3,050/t (USD443-475/t) d.d.p in northwest China. Aluminum market remains sluggish and prebaked anode prices may continue to stay at the low levels next January.
A Shandong-based prebaked anode producer reported that they just signed a contract for deals in next month and the price was around RMB2,880/t (USD448/t) delivered to Inner Mongolia, down by RMB100/t (USD16/t) compared with that in last month. “Because of sluggish aluminum market, prebaked anode market moved down,” explained the source.
According to the source, they may produce around 500,000t of prebaked anode in 2015, based on the capacity of 500,000tpy. In 2014, they produced around 430,000t of the material. They also conclude deals in Shandong and Xinjiang, and prices slid down too, noted the source. They hold no stock on hand.
A Gansu-based prebaked anode producer confirmed that the price stays at the low level of RMB2,800/t (USD436/t) ex works, down from around RMB2,900/t (USD451/t) last month. “I don’t think the price will go down further as we earn few profits,” said the source, who added that some aluminum ingot producers cut production this year leading to soft demand for prebaked anode.
Based on the capacity of 70,000tpy, they may produce 60,000t of prebaked anode in 2015 and hold no stock now.
The source disclosed that they mainly conclude deals in the local market.
