Thai rebar market witnesses no improvement

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 13 Oct 15 - The rebar in Thailand continues to run slowly at the moment with prices falling down slightly in some regions. The current price of rebar TIS SD40 Φ16-35mm from local steel mills is THB12,500-12,900/t (USD354-365/t) VAT excluded. Insiders predict that it is likely that the price will further decrease in the short term.
A trader in Samut Prakarn disclosed that the current price for rebar TIS SD40 Φ16-25mm is THB12,500/t (USD354/t) VAT included, the same as that of last week.
According to the source, the price went down by around THB1,500/t (USD42/t) in September. In addition, he can offer a discount of THB50/t (USD1.4/t) to customers who place an order, no matter it is a large or small order. His current sales volume is around 8,000 tons per month, while it could reach 15,000 tons per month in the end of last month. He reveals that the market failed to see any improvement in past nine months of 2015 and he does not think it can recover in the remaining time of this year.
Another trader in Samut Prakarn tells that the current price of rebar TIS SD40 Φ16-30mm from local mills is THB12,900/t (USD365/t) VAT excluded, down by around THB100/t (USD3/t) compared with three weeks ago.
Noted by the source, the market continues to run inactively this month and there is little activity in the market at the moment. “The economy in Thailand developed slowly in the past year and the demand from engineering projects shrank fast during that time,” he says, adding that his current sales volume of rebar was around 3,000 tons in September, almost the same as that in August, while it was about 10,000 tons per month at the corresponding period of last year. The source shows little optimism for the market outlook.
