Cobalt sulfate prices retreat in China

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 26 Aug 15 - Cobalt sulfate prices decrease this week following the retreat of cobalt metal and cobalt chloride. Sources reported prices of RMB42,000-42,500/t (USD6,563-6,641/t) for cobalt sulfate 20.5%min, down by around RMB500/t (USD78/t) compared with that of last week.
A Chinese producer with an output of around 400tpm told Asian Metal that they lowered cobalt sulfate 20.5%min price by RMB500/t (USD78/t) to RMB42,500/t (USD6,641/t) this week, affecting by the retreat of cobalt chloride. “Demand for cobalt sulfate 20.5%min is stable. The fall in price is limited, mainly because of the retreat of cobalt chloride,” said the source, believing the price of cobalt sulfate 20.5%min will keep stable in the near term.
Due to the soft demand for cobalt tetroxide, cobalt chloride price dropped to around RMB46,500/t (USD7,266/t) from RMB47,500/t (USD7,422/t) early this month. The producer now does not have much cobalt sulfate 20.5%min in stock.
A Chinese consumer demanding around 80tpm of cobalt sulfate 20.5%min confirmed that cobalt sulfate 20.5%min prices are at between RMB42,000-42,500/t (USD6,563-6,641/t) according to payment terms, down by around RMB500/t (USD78/t) compared with that early this month. “We just purchased around 40t of cobalt sulfate 20.5%min at RMB42,500/t (USD6,641/t) with payment of back acceptance,” said the source. Considering the soft cobalt market and sliding prices of cobalt metal and cobalt salts, the consumer is in no hurry to buy cobalt sulfate 20.5%min.
Commenting on the trend, the source said cobalt sulfate 20.5%min price is likely to keep stable in the near term, but may drop again in September if the prices of cobalt metal and cobalt chloride continue to go down.
