Export prices for Central African tagged tantalum concentrate increase slightly

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 11 Mar 15 - Sources of Central African tagged tantalum concentrate export market reported improved offering prices of between USD80-82/lb FOB China, up by USD1/lb from those of last week. Some overseas suppliers have confirmed to Asian Metal that the challenges in sourcing tagged material out of Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo have intensified in recent weeks, causing relative tightness in supply of certified conflict-free material.
A Central African tantalite trader revealed to Asian Metal that inquiries from domestic tantalum smelters have increased over the past 5-7 days and he regains faith in the future market. “The problem at the moment is finding suitable tantalite supply to meet the demands of tantalum smelters. I’ve received a handful of strong enquiries in recent days, but can’t move forward with the deals as my stocks are almost empty.” said the source,
The source explained that he offers tagged tantalite 30%min at USD80-82/lb FOB China, up by USD1/lb from those of last week.
One tantalum smelter in South China commented that he was being offered tagged Central African origin material at USD80-85/lb d.d.p early this week, up by almost USD1/lb from last week, although he was reluctant to purchase material due to sufficient stock levels.
The source mentioned that despite the struggling downstream tantalum capacitor powder market offering no signs of life this quarter, he mentioned that strong demand from the superalloy market has helped prices of tantalum metal hold firm, offering greater encouragement for tantalite miners and smelters.
