BEIJING (Asian Metal) 6 Nov 08 – Most Chinese smelters do not lower the bismuth price sharply this week, with the mainstream price of bismuth 99.99%min at around RMB120,000/t (USD7.95/lb), down by RMB2,000/t from that last week
“End-users do not send many inquiries for bismuth 99.99%min and some smelters who have capital pinches lower their prices to around RMB120,000-123,000/t (USD7 . 95-8.14/lb) this week, down by RMB2,000/t from that last week,” said a producer, who has a monthly production capacity of 50t .
The smelter does not have bismuth inventories and will produce after getting firm orders. “Considering the production cycle from the raw material to bismuth ingot, we do not dare to hold crude bismuth inventories,” said the source .
The smelter got an inquiry for five tons of bismuth 99.99%min from a bismuth oxide producer. “The buyer is able to accept the price of RMB120,000/t (USD7.95/b) for bismuth 99 . 99%min and we are considering to accept the order,” said the source.
Another producer, who produced 50t in October and halted production this month, confirmed the slight price decrease from RMB123,000-125,000/t (USD8.14-8.28/lb) to RMB120,000-122,000/t (USD7 . 95-8.08/lb) this week.
“The price of bismuth concentrate (with 30%min bismuth content) is at around RMB85,000/t VAT excluded and on the basis of raw material, our production cost of bismuth 99.99%min is RMB120,000/t (USD7.95/lb) VAT included,” said the source, adding that to produce more bismuth metal means to lose more money, so they chose to stop production .
Many other smelters will not lose money by selling the material, so most suppliers watch the market and refuse to lower the price sharply. Moreover, with many lead and silver smelting plants having halted productions in Chenzhou, Hunan province, the supply of bismuth raw materials will decrease and the market may gradually stabilize, predicted the source.
