Chinese flake graphite producers increase production

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 24 Apr 23 - From late last month, flake graphite producers from north China increased or restarted operation and the supply increased. Current mainstream prices for flake graphite -194 and +895 keep at RMB4,520-4,720/t (USD656-685/t) EXW and RMB8,200-8,400/t (USD1,190-1,219/t) EXW respectively, both stable from one week ago. Producers remain pessimistic and anticipate lower prices early next month because of the sluggish demand.
A flake graphite producer from Heilongjiang reported that they restarted operation one month ago and produced less than 3,000t in March, while the volume in April will reach over 3,000t. "Our best offer for flake graphite -194 now keeps at RMB4,500/t (USD653/t) EXW and lately sold around 3,000t at the offer two weeks ago," said the source, who predicts that the price might go down a bit early next month as the market supply will increase.
With the production capacity of 50,000tpy, the producer produced less than 3,000t in March and the volume might reach over 3,000t in April, with no stock now. They produced close to 30,000t in 2022 and once shut down operation late last year.
A Shandong-based flake graphite producer confirmed that they might produce 1,500t in April, up from around 1,000t in March after winter. "We now offer RMB8,300/t (USD1,204/t) EXW for flake graphite +895, unchanged from one week ago," said the source, who lately sold around 300t at around RMB8,300/t (USD1,204/t) EXW one week ago. As the purchase activity remains slow, the source anticipates lower prices early next month.
The producer, with the production capacity of 25,000tpy, produced over 4,000t so far this year and close to 15,000t in 2022, with current inventories at around 4,000t.
