Brazilian miner Vale said on Thursday that it had completed prefeasibility studies for potentially developing a nickel sulphide operation in Quebec, Canada.
The proposed project would be the first-of-its-kind fully domestic nickel sulphate facility for the North American market. Based on feasibility work to date, the project would have annual capacity to process 25,000 tonnes of contained nickel into nickel sulphate.
A final investment decision will depend on a number of additional factors including regulatory approval and requirements from the battery industry, which would be supplied by the plant, Vale added in a securities filing.
