BEIJING (Asian Metal) 3 Aug 05 - Chinese ferrochrome prices keep dropping in August, producers reported.
A Shaanxi-based smelter now sells HC ferrochrome for RMB6,300/t, down from MRB6,450-6,500/t in July. "We have to reduce the price," said the producer, "otherwise we will lose some long-term customers,"
The smelter produces about 1,500tpm of HC ferrochrome and has no material in stock.
Meanwhile, a Gansu-based smelter sells HC ferrochrome for RMB6,300/t, down from RMB6,450/t in July. "The ferrochrome demand still remains weak now," said the producer. "We have no profit for RMB6,300/t at all, but have to produce for some long-term customers . "
The smelter now produces about 100tpm of HC ferrochrome and usually sells to steel mills.
However, a Sichuan-based smelter's HC ferrochrome prices still keep around RMB6,400-6,600/t. "We sell HC ferrochrome for RMB6,400/t to long-term customers and same at RMB6,500-6,600/t to some small buyers," said the producer. "But I think the price will continue to drop at least by RMB100/t in August . "
With an output of 2,000tpm of HC ferrochrome, the producer has not concluded August's HC ferrochrome supply contracts with steel mills yet.
The producer purchased about 20,000-30,000/t of chrome ore early last week, with prices around USD200/t for India-origin chrome ore 50% and USD180-190/t for Turkish-origin chrome ore 44%.
