Changfa Smelting to build new submerged arc furnace for HC ferrochrome production

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 12 Jan 21 - Changfa Smelting Co., Ltd., one of HC ferrochrome producers in Zimbabwe, plans to build a new submerged arc furnace this year, a source from the company revealed.
The source said, "We plan to build a new submerged arc furnace for HC ferrochrome production this year and the annual production capacity of the material would rise by nearly 32,500t to about 68,500t." The source noted that they have two 8,000Kva submerged arc furnaces for HC ferrochrome production, only supplying to the European market, now they plan to build a new furnace of 12,500Kva for the supply to China. The Cr content of their HC ferrochrome is not lower than 60%. Employees taking vaccination would go to Zimbabwe after the Spring Festival and the construction period of the furnace is expected to be nearly half a year.
With an annual production capacity of about 36,000t and two submerged arc furnaces of 8,000Kva, the company produced less than 15,000t of HC ferrochrome in 2020 and nearly 30,000t in 2019.
On Monday, mainstream prices for HC ferrochrome Cr 52%min C 8%max stand at RMB6,400-6,600/t (USD988-1,019/t) EXW D/P in Chinese market, up by RMB200/t (USD30.88/t) from late last week.
