Nucor to open Frostproof steel mill in Q4

Nucor Corp. is scheduled to open its $240 million steel mill south of Frostproof in the fourth quarter, more than two years after the Charlotte, N.C., company announced the project in early 2018.
The company has already hired about 75% of the 250 people who will work at the 620,000-square-foot plant, according to Drew Wilcox, a Nucor vice president and general manager of the plant who is overseeing construction.
Construction is still going on, but the plant will be fully operational by the end of the year, Wilcox said. Employment should reach 250 workers next year.
Nucor had originally hoped to open the plant by this summer, but delays in permitting extended the construction startup, he said. The COVID-19 pandemic has had little impact. But the pandemic has affected the steel business, he added.
