Japan's ordinary steel export volume up by 1.8% YOY in H1

According to the data recently released by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF), the export volume of Japan's ordinary steel in the second quarter of 2020 is about 4.959 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 14.2%; the export volume in the first half of the year is about 11.007 million tons, with a year-on-year growth of 1.8%. It has been revealed that the year-on-year increase in export volume does not mean that Japan's export of ordinary steel is better in the first half of the year, but only because the base number of the same period last year is too low.
It is reported that between the end of 2018 and the first quarter of 2019, some Japanese long-process steel mills encountered a series of production line equipment failures, which led to a decline in overall production. Japanese steel mills must give priority to domestic customers. Therefore, the export volume in the first half of last year was relatively less.
At the same time, Japan's imports of ordinary steel in the first half of the year were about 2.079 million tons, down by 16.4% year on year; imports of special steel were about 332,000 tons, down by 14.2% year on year.
