EU to impose temporary tariffs on stainless steel products from China

EU Commission recently declared to impose a temporary import tariff of 28.5% on part of stainless steel products from China.
According to the EU Commission, part of stainless steel products from China have been granted unfair subsidies and therefore would be levied import tariffs ranging from 17.2% to 28.5%. Involved Chinese steel enterprises include HBIS, Shougang Group, Shagang Group and so on. EU Commission will hold a hearing within 25 days, at which the involved Chinese enterprises can defend themselves with evidences.
Over the recent years, EU has adopted a number of anti-dumping measures against Chinese origin steel products. On April 6, 2017, EU Commission declared that it would impose anti-dumping tariffs of 18.1-35.9% on HR coils imported from China.
Previously, China Ministry of Commerce Trade Remedy and Investigation Bureau director Mr. Wang Hejun commented that China had been closely watching the trade protectionism trend that EU Commission showed in the steel industry. Trade protectionism couldn’t fundamentally solve the issue of production capacity surplus in the global steel industry; instead, it would constitute an obstruction to normal international trading and be harmful to the sustainable development of the global steel industry.
