Chinese bauxite imports up by 27.3% YOY H1 2017

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 25 Jul 17 - Based on China Customs, Chinese bauxite import volume moved up by 27.3% YOY to around 32 million tonnes in the first half of 2017. In June, the volume went up by 21.6% MOM to around 6.89 million tonnes.

The above graph shows that the import volume in June touched the record high level over the past 18 months. In June, the imports from most countries increased. Guinea continued to be the biggest supplier in June with a volume of around 2.7 million tonnes, up by 21% MOM, followed by Australia with a volume of 2.37 million tonnes, up by 23.5% MOM. We can see details by the following table:
During H1, Guinea exported around 12.2 million tonnes of bauxite to China, accounting for 38.1% of China’s total imports, followed by Australia with volume and ratio at around 11.6 million tonnes and 36.4%. The imports from Malaysia, India and Brazil were around 3.37 million tonnes, 1.64 million tonnes and 1.38 million tonnes respectively, accounting for 10.5%, 5.1% and 4.3%.

Compared to the same period of last year, the imports from Guinea and Australia rose by 167.6% and 22.2%, but the contribution from Malaysia, India and Brazil dropped by 35.3%, 51.5% and 11.2% respectively.
The above pie chart shows that Chinese top five imported bauxite origins are Guinea, Australia, Malaysia, India and Brazil successively in H1.
In the second half of this year, Malaysia may restrict the export license due to upcoming president election early next year. Meanwhile, Indian bauxite supply will be less due to monsoon during June and October. Supply from Guinea and Australia will continue to keep at high levels.
