Chinese zinc ore imports up by 24.3% YOY Jan-May

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 27 Jun 17 - Based on China Customs, China imported around 1.13 million tonnes of zinc ore from January to May in total, up by 24.3% YOY. In May, the volume edged up by 3.4% MOM to around 218,000t.

From January to May, the imports from Peru moved up by 39.2% YOY to around 300,000t, while the figure for Australia dropped by 9.5% YOY to around 291,000t.

In April and May, the imports from Australia kept sliding. In May, the volume from Australia dropped by 60% MOM to around 20,000t, but the volume from Peru rose by 70.8% MOM to around 95,000t.
Because of strict environmental protection policy in China, most mining producers cut or halted production in April and May. In addition, mining producers in South China are forced to cut or halt production in June due to rainfall. Zinc ore supply becomes tight in China. Therefore, the imports may continue to increase.
