Thai angle steel prices up

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 26 Feb 16 - Thai angle steel prices showed an upward trend supported by higher raw material prices. The mainstream price of angle steel SS400 50mm*50mm*5mm is THB17,900-18,600/t (USD503-523/t). However, the downstream demand is not strong, and insiders don’t believe that the angle steel market in Thailand will turn much better within a short period.
A steel trader in Bangkok said that the current price of angle steel SS400 50mm*50mm*5mm is THB18,600/t (USD523/t) VAT included, increasing by THB200/t (USD6/t) compared with that of two weeks ago.
The source told Asian Metal that the price of iron ore fine 63.5%min imported from India has increased by USD7.5/dt to USD35/dt FOB India since the beginning of February. Prices of steel billet and other raw materials also increased to some extent. Therefore, local producers moved up their ex-works prices of angle steel, leading to a market price rise in most Thai cities. However, he also disclosed that the downstream demand remains weak without enough construction projects in Thailand. His current sales volume is 100tpd against 150tpd in Q3 last year. With a stockpile of 3,000-4,000t in hand, he prefers to hold a cautious attitude towards the forthcoming market.
Another steel trader in Rayong reports that the price of angle steel SS400 50mm*50mm*5mm is THB18,000/t (USD506/t) VAT included, increasing by THB200/t (USD6/t) compared with that of two weeks ago.
The source confirmed a dim angle steel market despite the price increase. According to him, the demand from local buyers hasn’t shown any signs of becoming stronger this month to date. His current sales volume is 150-200tpd, almost the same as that at the beginning of this month. Holding a stockpile of 6,000t against 10,000t during the corresponding period of last year, he has no confidence in the angle steel market outlook.
