BEIJING (Asian Metal) 15 Jan 15 - According to the statistics from Asian Metal, the total alumina output in 2014 accumulated around 49.45 million tonnes, up by around 4.43% on a yearly basis.
As Chalco shut down its alumina refineries in Guizhou and Chongqing, which have a combined capacity of around 2,000,000tpy, in the second half of 2014, we can see from the above picture that the yearly growth rate of annual alumina output decrease to some extent compared with that during 2013.
However, as there were also a few new alumina projects, with a combined capacity of around 1,600,000tpy, that were put into operation, the annual alumina output in 2014 increased slightly during 2014.
As alumina prices climbed to relatively high levels during the fourth quarter, some alumina producers that were forced to cut production earlier, such as Chongqing Bosai and Chiping Xinfa, had already started to increase production during that period of time and may continue to resume production in 2015. Besides, according to the data from Asian Metal, there will be at least another 2 million tonnes of alumina project waiting to come on stream in 2015, so the annual alumina output in 2015 will continue to increase.
