BEIJING (Asian Metal) 31 Mar 14 - Malaysian steel plate market makes no progress at this moment and prices keep stable in general. Supported by mild demand in domestic market, insiders predict stable prices in the short run .
A steel plate trader from Selangor reports to Asian Metal that his quotation for S275JR 14-25mm produced by local steel mills is MYR2,400/t (USD732/t), the same as that of last week.
According to the source, the price is stable in local market and the demand is mild because a light rail is under construction in Kuala Lumpur which consumes considerable plates and sections. The source reveals that list prices of plate from local mills are flat for the moment, but offers from Chinese suppliers decreased by USD5-10/t last week, so the local price will be unchanged under the pressure from that.
Another steel plate trader from Selangor offers MYR2,350/t (USD717/t) for S275JR 14-25mm from local steel mills, unchanged compared with that of last week.
With the sales volume of 800-900tpm against the target level of 1,000tpm, the source thinks the market will be steady in the short run. He reveals that the current quotation for above products from Chinese suppliers is only USD525/t CFR Malaysia, and that is much lower than the local purchasing cost considering the 20% import duty.
