BEIJING (Asian Metal) 18 May 05 – According to trader sources, domestic market prices for selenium powder experienced a slight decline during the May holidays, while import prices still hold high.
“We just purchased 2t of Mitsubishi selenium powder for USD52/lb,” a Tianjin-based trader said, “Compared with other bids, such a price is rather favorable.”
The source reported that foreign suppliers are strictly controlling their export amount in order to keep the market price high. “Supply has remained tighte in recent weeks,” the source said .
“Nearly a month after the Chinese Export Commodities Fair, consumption of selenium powder, especially from the glass industry, has been gradually increasing,” said the source. “Therefore, we are optimistic about the future selenium market . ”
However, another South China-based trader holds that the selenium powder price will continue to soften in accordance with the slipping selenium dioxide price.
“Foreign suppliers quoted as high as USD54-55/lb, so we didn’t import selenium powder since last month,” said the source, adding that the company has no intention of importing at the moment due to the unclear market.
“The selenium dioxide market has softened, and the selenium powder price is likely to drag,” the source said. “Price fluctuation for selenium powder usually lags behind . ”
According to the source, despite high import prices, the market prices have remained comparatively stable during the past week.
