OverviewMore
Constrained by slow economic growth rate in China in particular and slow pace of global economic recovery in general, magnesia market has continued to weather in uncertainty owing to the fact that most steel mills have been operating at low level at barely higher than 70% capacity. The immediate result has been stoppage in magnesia production as many plants have gone bankrupt.
Going forward, what is of interest to stakeholders is realistically managing the risk failures in the magnesia sector of the steel industry with a view to minimizing market failures and remain optimally efficient given global magnesia demand.
As European debt crisis has been largely contained but not yet resolved on longer term, global magnesia demand remains on decline and with profits being squeezed, which is an issue of concern and great challenges to magnesia industry. Now that the quantity of magnesia export quotas reduced to 660,000t in the first half of 2013, will the export prices move up as expected? Or will the export market reverse the sluggish situation?
And as export quotas of Sic and Bauxite will be canceled in 2013, what course to follow for magnesia export quotas? Will government resort to resource and pollution tax measures in order to protect the most important raw material of refractories and resource in the near future?
