Influenced by the ebbing subsidies to the new energy, the China’s new energy auto market does not live up to the expectation in 2018, when the lithium carbonate and cobalt sulfate prices have been sliding down. In order to bolster the competitive edge of domestic products and improve the battery endurance life, the new energy industrial chain, ranging through cobalt sulfate, nickel sulfate, lithium carbonate and cathode materials to the downstream batteries and the auto market, has been proactively investing in high-nickel cathode materials development. The consumption downgrading has driven down the demand on the 3C consumer electronics market in 2018, the growth momentum of orders from the international market of lithium cobaltate and Cobalt tetrachloride has been running low. Will 2019 witness a robust recovery on the market of new energy power and 3C electronics?
The time for D.R.C. to implement windfall profit tax is yet to be confirmed. The market of cobalt raw materials will gradually pick up steam as some major companies, such as Glencore and Eurasian Resources, start to launch their products and exploit mines respectively. However, the global end-demand market is still holding the wait-and-see attitude. The downstream demand end of the emerging market of batteries is now sluggish, and traditional alloys and magnets markets are declining owing to the sanctions of tariffs from the U.S. Will the cobalt industry remain down in 2019?
The Spodumene resources in Australia have been gradually released and the Chinese market, due to the big downfall of the lithium carbonate price, will not purchase it at a high price any more. The cost of mining outside China is comparatively high. It is predicted on the market that the price of long-term procurement of spodumene will become the “wind vane” of the lithium carbonate market. Where will the market of lithium go?
