According to information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the ministry will implement industrial low-carbon campaign and green manufacturing project and formulate action plan and route map to peak carbon dioxide emissions for iron and steel, cement and other major industries on the basis of the goal node for peaking carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality.
Iron and steel industry is one of the major industries for peaking carbon dioxide emissions this year. The former director of material and industry department iron and steel division of MIIT Xu Wenli said that as a high-intensive industry of energy consumption, iron and steel industry makes the largest carbon emissions among 31 categories of manufacturing industry . With the restrictions from the goal for peaking carbon dioxide emissions in 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality in 2060, iron and steel industry faces unavoidable challenges and must take actions from now on.
MIIT will strictly control iron and steel capacity this year. Xu Wenli noted, "Iron and steel industry should work harder to firmly condense the output of crude steel and ensure a year-on-year decrease of crude steel output around the goal node for peaking carbon dioxide emissions and achieving carbon neutrality . MIIT will release a new version of measures for iron and steel capacity transfer and upgrade the capacity information early warning mechanism.
Thermal power, cement, nonferrous, petrochemical, chemical, coal chemical and other industries will also witness restrictions for peaking carbon dioxide emissions. At present, emissions of carbon dioxide in relevant industrial fields account for about 80% of the total emissions of the whole country.
