MEE: China reduces steel production capacity by about 200 million tons during 13th Five-Year Plan

On October 21, 2020, Zhao Yingmin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), stated at a press conference on the 13th Five-Year Plan ecological and environmental protection work held by the Information Office of the State Council that MEE, together with relevant departments in various localities, thoroughly implemented the Party Central Committee's emission control measures to vigorously conduct various tasks, making China's air quality improved significantly.
Zhao Yingmin revealed that the green transformation and upgrading of the industrial structure during the 13th Five-Year Plan period achieved substantial results. About 200 million tons of iron and steel production capacity were reduced, and 140 million tons of substandard steel were cleared . By the end of 2019, coal-fired power plants completed ultra-low emission transformation of 890 million kWh . At present, China's crude steel production capacity of about 610 million tons is undergoing the transformation of ultra-low emissions.
