AISI: U.S. finished steel imports down by nearly 17% YOY in 2020

According to the prediction of the latest report released by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the imports of finished steel of the United States will decline significantly this year. Based on the steel import data for the first four months of this year, AISI estimates that American imports of finished steel in 2020 would fall by nearly 17% compared with the previous year.
The total imports of finished steel of the United States in 2020 are expected to be 17.456 million tons, which was 21.051 million tons in 2019, a decrease of 17.1% YOY. In addition, the total imports of steel products of the country might decline slightly from 27.937 million tons in 2019 to 27.556 million tons, down by nearly 1.4%.
Among all kinds of steel products, only steel ingots, billets and slabs, mechanical pipes and rebar might see a surge in imports YOY. AISI predicts that the number of pipelines might experience the largest decline, and its imports are expected to fall by about 57% YOY.
